What is an AI Podcast?

The rise of AI technology is changing how businesses communicate with their audiences. With new tools from tech giants like Google's Notebook LLM and Meta's Notebook Llama entering the market, many business leaders are looking at AI podcasts as a way to reach their professional audience.

But what exactly is an AI podcast, and how can it work for your business?

Two Approaches to AI Podcasting

At its core, an AI podcast uses artificial intelligence to transform written content into audio. But not all AI podcasts are created equal - there are two main approaches that businesses need to understand.

The first is what we call a Pure AI Podcast. These are generated entirely by artificial intelligence, taking your written content and turning it directly into a finished episode. While these tools are quick and easy to use, they come with significant limitations:

  • Only one conversation style is typically available
  • Limited voice selection options
  • Basic audio quality
  • No control over pacing or emphasis

Both Google's Notebook LLM and Meta's Notebook Llama fall into this category - they're promising tools, but they're still in early stages and only offer basic conversational formats.

Notebook LLM has, so far, received the most coverage since it's the most available and can be easily accessed online. Notebook Llama, on the other hand, requires you download the repository and get the code running for yourself.

The Hybrid Alternative

The second approach is the Hybrid AI Podcast. These combine AI-generated voices and content with professional audio engineering. This approach gives businesses much more flexibility in how their podcast sounds and feels. You can have multiple conversation styles, train custom voices, and benefit from professional sound design. The trade-off is that these take more time to produce, but the result is a more polished, professional product.

Choosing the Right Approach

Understanding when to use each type is crucial for business success.

Pure AI podcasts may work well for companies that need to produce high volumes of content quickly and inexpensively without worrying about the quality of the content. Small financial services firms may use them for market updates and analysis, while technology companies might use them for regular product updates or developer guides. The key advantage is speed and consistency - you can turn written content into audio quickly and reliably. The key drawback is that you can't use your own voice and, as such, you don't build that personal connection with audience members.

Hybrid AI podcasts, on the other hand, are better suited for premium content where quality matters more than speed. Professional services firms often choose this approach for client-facing content, as it allows them to maintain their brand standards while still benefiting from AI efficiency. Healthcare organizations might use hybrid AI for patient education materials, where clear communication and professional delivery are essential.

The Current Market

Beyond Google's Notebook LLM and Meta's Notebook Llama, the AI podcast market is still emerging. While there are many tools that handle parts of the process - like Play.ht and Murf.ai for text-to-speech conversion, or Descript for AI-powered audio editing - complete podcast generation is still a specialized field.

It's important to understand the difference between text-to-speech tools and full podcast generation. Text-to-speech tools can create voice audio from written content, but they don't handle the complex task of turning that content into a structured, engaging podcast episode. Similarly, AI editing tools can help with post-production, but they don't generate the podcast itself.

True AI podcast generation, whether pure or hybrid, needs to handle multiple elements: content structure, voice generation, pacing, and overall episode flow. This is why many current solutions focus on either the pure AI approach, with its limitations but quick turnaround, or the hybrid approach that combines AI capabilities with human expertise.

Making the Right Choice for Your Business

Before starting an AI podcast, business leaders need to consider three key factors:

  • Audience expectations - technical audiences might accept pure AI, while client-facing content might need hybrid production
  • Publishing frequency - daily updates suit pure AI, while weekly thought leadership benefits from hybrid approaches
  • Content complexity - straightforward updates work with pure AI, while complex ideas need hybrid control

Your source material matters as well. If you're only trying to disseminate technical documentation or market analysis, pure AI might work well. But if you're trying to convey complex ideas or emotional content, you'll likely need the additional control that comes with hybrid production.

Looking Ahead

The state of AI podcast technology is evolving rapidly. While current tools have clear limitations - especially in terms of voice variety and conversation styles - they're becoming more sophisticated every month. The key for businesses is to start with clear goals and stay flexible with their technology choices. Focus on producing quality content that serves your audience, whether that's through pure AI efficiency or hybrid sophistication.

Looking ahead, we're likely to see these technologies become more capable and nuanced. But for now, successful business podcasts depend on choosing the right approach for your specific needs. Pure AI tools like Notebook LLM and Notebook Llama might work well for some use cases, but they're not a complete solution for every business podcast need. The most successful companies are those that understand these limitations and choose their approach accordingly.

Remember, whether you choose pure AI or hybrid production, the final product needs to match your brand standards and serve your audience effectively. The technology should enable better communication, not compromise your professional standards.
